NANO Architecture + Interiors is proud to be a part of the impactful transformation of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, a $557 million endeavor reshaping our cityscape and fostering growth opportunities for emerging ventures and local small businesses like ours. According to recent news published by MCCNO, construction is expected to generate over $50 million in new small and emerging business (SEB) and disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE) contracts through 2026. NANO was awarded the role of Architect of Record for the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Interior Upgrades by the New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority, marking it as the largest contract ever awarded to a Small and Emerging Business by the authority.
Two years into the implementation of MCCNO's Capital Improvement Plan, significant strides have been made in fostering equity for small and disadvantaged businesses while transforming over 1 million square feet of facility space. Throughout each phase of Convention Center construction, contracts secured by SEB vendors have shown consistent growth. The Authority projects that the ongoing renovation will offer approximately $50 million in SEB/DBE contract opportunities, surpassing both industry standards and initial project expectations.
“A large part of this transformative project is to honor our commitment of making sure this project is sustainably sourced and equitably built. By committing a significant portion of this work to SEB/DBE vendors, we are investing in a future where all are valued and welcomed.” - Michael J. Sawaya, Convention Center President and CEO.
Beyond its considerable economic impact on New Orleans, the project has utilized impactful sustainable practices. As part of this commitment, the renovation aims to maintain the facility's LEED Gold certification. Noteworthy achievements include diverting over 84% of waste, encompassing construction materials, masonry, lights, and cardboard, away from landfills during Stage 1. Additionally, the implementation of the Armstrong Ceiling Recycling Program has resulted in a significant reduction in construction waste by recycling ceiling tiles.
Currently, NANO is completing the Phase 3 portion of work as a part of a 580,000 SF interior renovation consisting of first floor lobby areas, second and third floor pre-function corridors and skylights, and over 120 meeting rooms. New finishes have been installed throughout multiple exhibit halls, including custom-designed furniture, carpet, acrylic light boxes, acrylic panels, ceiling baffles, acoustical ceiling tiles, and signage. The last window of construction for Phase 3 is expected to be complete Spring 2024, with construction on Phases 1 and 2 expected to begin in Fall 2024.
